David Symonds Associates was founded in 1989 and, since that time, has grown to be one of the leading independent civil and structural engineering practices in the Midlands area.
We have a first class reputation for providing a wide range of engineering services to our clients, who range from private individuals to internationally known companies. Our success is based on maintaining a cost-effective and friendly service.
Whatever service you require, from the design of a simple beam to a structural survey for house purchase, from the design of a house extension to the engineering design for a major project, or if you suspect your building has structural problems, then we are here to help.
We also have considerable experience of project management and are able to adopt a ‘hands-on’ service to our clients, seeing the project through from initial concept to final handover.

We can provide a full structural appraisal of a property prior to purchase or curtail the service to suit your specific requirements.
We appreciate, that purchasing a new house can be a stressful experience and we aim to provide a fast and efficient service at all times. We can normally inspect a property within 48 hours of receipt of instructions and reports will usually be available within a further 48 hours.
We also appreciate that reports need to be in plain English and not filled with technical jargon.

We have considerable experience in providing expert witness advice to solicitors and their clients. We also act for all the major Insurance Companies and Loss Adjusters in the country, providing an expert independent assessment of all areas of structural damage. We are widely acknowledged as providing a first class independent service in plain English to our clients.
All the partners have experience of producing reports in accordance with the Civil procedure rules and presenting evidence in Court. We have acted as Single Joint Expert on a number of occasions.

We have invested heavily in the latest structural engineering design programs and computer-aided drawing facilities. This enables us to provide a fast, efficient design service, whether it is for a single beam or for a large complex multi-storey building.
We can tailor our service to suit the needs of our client. We have the capacity in-house to deal with a wide range of projects and have acted as sole designer for major refurbishment projects up to a value £750,000. We have good local contacts with Architects, Quantity Surveyors and Services Engineers so that, where a project requires, we can build a team to suit the requirements of any project.
We are fully conversant with current Health and Safety Legislation and where necessary are able to provide CDM Services through our associated company, David Symonds (CDM) Limited.

We now regularly provide a full project management service to our clients from the original concept through to the final handover of the project. This enables us to take the day-to-day hassle of a project from the client and leave them to manage their own business.
Through our expertise and association with a wide range of local contractors, we are able to provide a trouble-free service to clients, from simple maintenance costing a few thousand pounds to a major refurbishment such as the extension and enhancement of the Robin 2 Club in Bilston which cost over £750,000, the refurbishment of an office block in Birmingham City Centre costing around £700,000 and the reconstruction of the Severn Valley Railway following major flood damage which cost in excess of £4m.

We have acted as the Consulting Engineers to the Severn Valley Railway since they were formed in the early 1970’s.

We have acted as the Consulting Engineers to the Severn Valley Railway since they were formed in the early 1970’s and are also retained by Llangollen Railway and Gloucestershire Warwickshire Steam Railway to advise on their structures and engineering formation.
In this role, we have considerable expertise in inspecting structures on the line and advising on remedial works.
Our experience on these historic lines has given us particular expertise in the maintenance and refurbishment of historic Listed Buildings. Many of the structures are individually listed and any works require detailed liaison with Local Authority Conservation Officers and on occasion English Heritage.
Our work with Llangollen Railway recently earned us an Award in the Institution of Civil Engineers, Historic Bridge and Infrastructure Awards.
We have also advised a number of insurance companies on major civil engineering problems. One project included the remediation of a major landslip in the Bewdley area, where failure of a slope threatened the stability of a bungalow at the top of the slope, with the further risk that the landslide would engulf a cottage at the base of the slope. Working with specialist contractors, we designed and project-managed a £400,000 scheme to stabilise the slope and protect the properties on the slope.

We have considerable experience of the Party Wall etc Act 1996 and have acted as surveyor for both the building owner.

With the rapid escalation of house prices in the Midlands area, more and more people are looking to extend and improve their property rather than face the inconvenience, stress and cost of moving house. With our design expertise and experience in carrying out building inspections, we are able to provide a comprehensive design service for all projects from the construction of a simple en-suite to a major extension and refurbishment. Our experience of construction defects ensures that these are designed out at an early stage to give the client a long-term maintenance-free building.
We utilise the latest computer-aided design software where appropriate and this is always checked by manual methods to ensure the output is logical and appropriate. All drawings are produced utilising the latest AutoCad packages ensuring a compatibility with Architects and other specialists where required. Where appropriate, drawings and documents can be transferred electronically to ensure the minimum delay in providing information to our clients.
Services – Party Wall
We have considerable experience of the Party Wall etc Act 1996 and have acted as surveyor for both the building owner and adjoining owner as defined within the Act. We have on occasion acted as the ‘Third Surveyor’.
We adopt a practical ‘hands on’ approach to the Party Wall Act and wherever possible we will work with the building owner and the neighbours to explain the legislation and ensure as smooth a path as possible through any construction work, whilst fully complying with the legislation.
